Laptops
iPad
Magazines, newspapers, books
Procedure:
Introduction – Have the students take out their word sorts and participate in a speed sort. Use the projectable timer and have them record their time in their word study notebooks.
Activity – Have the students break up into their spelling groups and work at the assigned station.
Station 1 – Spelling City: Have the students go to www.spellingcity.com and type in their word list. They should complete 2-3 activities in the spelling and vocabulary games. Station 2 – Sign Language: Have the students work in pairs and use the sign language alphabet poster. One student chooses a word and signs it, and their partner needs to write it on their communicator. They need to then use the word in a sentence. Station 3 – Word Hunt: Have the students look through books, magazines, newspapers, and the internet (designated websites only) for words that follow the rule for the week’s sort. They should compile a list of the new words in their word study notebooks. One on One – iPad: Meet with individual students and have them write the dictated spelling word on the Whiteboard app. Then have them use the word in a sentence and record it with the Dragon Dictation app and play it back for them.
Closure – Students should return to their seats and participate in the speed sort again and try to beat their original time.
Assessment: Students will be assessed on the spelling test the following day.
*Students will rotate through the stations on a weekly basis, so everyone gets a chance to work at all of them.
